Halfway up the Montagne du Roule overlooking Cherbourg is an underground fortress that was a strategic element of the Atlantic Wall.
This remarkable site is listed as a Historical Monument of France and will be opened to the public for the first time in 2009. Visitors are led along the fort's 700 meters of tunnels dug from the rock by German soldiers and their prisoners in 1940, its four batteries and its headquarters, to experience garrison life and the violent combats when the fortress was liberated by the Allies.
